The Differences between BCC and CC of Email

Email is a popular method of communication in a variety of professional environments so it's important to understand how to use the medium correctly at work. Most emails include various recipient fields, such as CC and BCC.

Carbon copy (CC) is an email field that allows someone to send several copies of the same email to multiple people or email inboxes.

BCC is an abbreviation that stands for blind carbon copy. It sends exact copies of the email to multiple recipients without allowing the recipients to see how many other people received the email.

The differences between CC and BCC are:

CC

  • Everyone who receives the email can see all CC’s addresses.
  • Use CC when you want to keep someone in the loop, and it’s okay for others to know they received the email.
  •  Example: Sending a meeting invite to our club members and CC'ing to our Dean of Students Affairs.
BCC
  • No one (except the sender) can see who was BCC’d. It’s hidden from all recipients.

  • Use BCC when you want to send someone a copy without others knowing.

  • Example: Sending an announcement to many people without revealing their email addresses.
